This is Part 1 of a 5-Part Series on Strongholds
If you have been around me for any length of time recently, you have probably heard me refer to “strongholds”, and how God has freed me from several of them. But, what, exactly, is a “stronghold”? In this context, I am using the term “stronghold” as a metaphor.
In biblical times, people lived in small communities; sometimes there were walls built around the community to protect them from invasion. Frequently, there was a large stone fortress or building where the people would take shelter if they were under attack. By definition, a stronghold is
“a place that has been fortified so as to protect it against attack.” (“the enemy stronghold”)
“A place where a particular cause or belief is strongly defended or upheld.” (“A Republican stronghold or a liberal stronghold.”)
I believe we are all born with a genetic predisposition toward certain strongholds, most likely, several. And I also believe we acquire or are taught certain strongholds through our culture or upbringing.
The “abundant life” (see John 10:10) comes when you surrender those strongholds, whether innate or learned, to God; when He is the one and only thing you “run to” for security, protection, value, or truth.
